Using AI to improve your cognitive function

Written by Joe Cohen, BS | Last updated:

A couple of years ago, I wrote an email describing the emergence of AI.

In it, I said:

“AI and technological advances are great, but what can you do when they put your job at risk?

Even though it’s not an issue right now, 10% of the population are at risk to lose their jobs in the near future with automated self-driving cars.

Once the technology takes hold, it will spread as fast as the adoption of the internet, cell phones and personal computing.

Many other industries and jobs will be automated as well over the next 10 years.”

Years later, and we’re starting to see this happening.

SelfDecode has its own AI algorithm to analyze millions of genetic variants, something that is revolutionizing the healthcare industry.

ChatGPT is already a mindblowing software to use.

Just think about how impressed you were when you first used ChatGPT, and take into consideration that right now, this AI tech is the worst it’ll ever be.

It will only get better with time.

What this means is that we are living in a time where there’s a monumental economic shift from AI that will force people to work in occupations that are higher skilled, and usually require better brain function.

How can you improve your cognitive abilities?

A lot of factors come into play when looking at this topic.

First, you want to look at the mental health aspect, as that plays a huge role in your overall cognitive function.

How well does your body handle stress and anxiety? What can you do to mitigate and remove these from your daily life?

If you’re experiencing issues with mental health, it’ll be hard to reach that next level.

Second, you need to look at your cognitive problems and traits. This includes things like brain fog, attention, processing speed, and memory performance.

When I was initially trying to optimize my brain function, I went through hours of research and testing to optimize everything listed above and get to where I am today.

The key to it all? Personalization.

I found key lifestyle, diet, and supplement changes based on my DNA.

I wanted to make this process a thousand times easier, so I had my science team dive into the peer-reviewed literature.

Ironically, with the help of SelfDecode’s AI, they created the Brain Health Summary Report – a way to improve your brain function with a personalized, gene-based approach.

NEGR1, MEF2C, and The Brain Health Summary Report

The Brain Health Summary Report combines all health topics that I’ve listed above plus more – 20 in total – and puts them in one easy-to-understand “summary” report.

My cognitive function was one of the first things that I focused on when I got into biohacking.

You can try and optimize things like your heart health or gut health first, but if your brain isn’t working well, then it’ll be hard to even implement changes to optimize other health areas.

When looking at my own report, I had a couple of high genetic risk scores (the sad red faces) but the one that stood out the most was Low Mood.

SelfDecode analyzes 84,205 genetic variants to give me this score, but it also gives you the top variants that most likely impact your genetic predisposition.

For me, the NEGR1 gene was at the top of the list.

This gene sends instructions to the body to create proteins that are involved in regulating neurotransmitter systems that are responsible for mood balancing – like dopamine and serotonin.

If you carry the negative variant, the gene doesn’t work properly, and mood imbalances might occur.

Another gene high on my list was the MEF2C gene, which plays a role in the development and function of the brain.

Reduced MEF2C gene expression is connected with anxiety-like behavior and depressive-like symptoms.

SelfDecode looked at these genes and thousands of others to give me my personalized diet, lifestyle, and supplement recommendations.

The highest on the list was 5-HTP.

I’m sure you’ve all heard me rave about 5-HTP in emails, on socials, in my podcast, and pretty much anywhere else where I have the opportunity to talk about mood.

It was even the first ingredient that I put in my custom mood supplement, Mood Daily.

It really did change my life.

But before SelfDecode, it took me YEARS to discover 5-HTP.

If SelfDecode existed back then, I would’ve discovered the key supplement to improve my brain health in a total of 5 minutes.

I’ll admit, the beginning of this email was a little doom-and-gloom when discussing AI, but there are also so many benefits coming out of it.
